Love Blog #1 :What a parent wants....
Reflection: I completed the Perfect Mate form with my parents, and discovered something quite interesting! Let me tell you about it (due Monday, February 7)...
I was 75% right about my mom and what she would choose to be a great girl for me. I though that she would say that the girl has to be really nice and that it doesn't matter about looks. She said that the girl has to have self confidence, high morals, self respect, independence and that she should be athletic. As I predicted nothing about looks. I predicted that my dad would say that she would have to be hot and rich but he didn't get a chance to respond. The perfect girl for me in my eyes has to be pretty and not too short. She has to have an outgoing personality and loves to do outdoors stuff. This is what I discovered through the Perfect Mate form.
I completed the Perfect Mate form with my parents, and I was surprised to find that we had very similar answers. My parents knew exactly what I would look for in a mate. Some of the traits I look for are athletic, funny, smart, outgoing, tall, and good looking and my parents listed good looks, funny, intelligent, and athletic when they answered. I didn't know what my parents would list as well as they knew what I would list though. My parents consider traits such as responsible, intelligent, honest, trustworthy, and others most important when choosing the perfect mate for me. I had a few of those, but not all of them when I listed what my parents would choose. I did however know my Dad would want my mate to love fishing, and of course I was right.
Derek Mollohan After doing my Perfect mate sheet I found out something very interesting about my mom. In my worksheet a physical trait that I had for my perfect mate was that she was moderately attractive and was shorter than me, which is hard because I’m only 5-1. It was interesting because when I looked at my mom’s answers one of the traits she would want for my perfect mate would be that she was shorter than me. Also in my work sheet I said that I would want a girl who wasn’t ditzy. My mom said that she wanted me to have a girlfriend who doesn’t act dumb. I thought that was funny because I know a lot of girls who act dumb to attract guys but it turns out that it’s a turn off. Finally I want my perfect mate to ski because I’m really into snow sports. My dad said he wanted her to ski because we have a ski condo in Vermont and that would be a good activity we could do all together. I’ve learned a lot about what appeals to my parents from this sheet.
The Perfect Mate form didn't surprise me much. My parents thought I would like someone respectful, kind, intelligent, and attractive. They were correct; that's most of what I would look for in a guy. They, of course, didn't care about the looks of my perfect mate; they only wanted him to be respectful of others, nice, and intellectually curious. The only surprise for them was that I had a height requirement: 5'6 or above (I don't want to be more than 5 inches taller than my partner).
Olivia Caccia When I did the Perfect Mate sheet, the answers weren't that surprising. My mom thought I would want someone who made me happy and is smart, kind, caring, and funny. She wasn't really into looks besides that he would probably be tall. I was kind of surprised that my mom wrote that my perfect mate would need a good job because I like to buy expensive things, which I do.
I completed the Perfect Mate sheet with my parents and I found out my mom knows exactly what I want in a man. She knew I would want someone that was rich, handsome, built well, nice and caring. I knew exactly what she would want me to bring home also. She would want someone who treated me like a princess and was trusting, caring, loving, and nice. It turns out my parents know exactly what I want and I know exactly what they want for me. We actually have the same taste in traits that we would want for my perfect mate.
When I finished the perfect mate form with my mom I found that we had chosen many of the same traits. We both said that he would have to be good looking and have a good personality as well as a caring personality. He would of course have to be funny because who wants a boring husband. We also agreed that he would have to be smart and care about school, but he would also have to be outgoing. Although we had many things alike I had thought of more traits that I would like to be in my perfect. He would have to have a nice eyes and hair, but most of all he would need to have a really nice smile. Finally, I decided that my perfect match would have to be romantic because after all, who doesn't want their man to be that?
When i completed the perfect mate from with my mom, i wasnt very suprised when I saw that we had most of the same answers. I talk about who I like and who I think is attractive with my mom a lot. She knows what types of people I can see myself with. The type of person that my mom wants me to be with is very similiar to what i thought and who I would want to be with because I value what my family thinks of guys. Both me and her want someone who has a sense of humor, very athletic, attractive (obviously), intelligent, someone thats respectful to my family. And someone who lets me be myself. As far as physical features go, my mom definetly got all of those right. I like guys who are tall, pretty eyes, a perfect smile, and preferably blonde hair.
After completing the student form, I learned that I'm very similar to my mom. She and I agreed alot on what a perfect mate would be like, inlduidng high morals, a good education, good hearted, and above all a good personality, someone that would be easy to get along with, because I feel that I am genuinly that kind of a person. We also agreed on the fact that she has to be good looking and funny.
When I was first given this assignment, I though that my parents and I would have completely different answers. However, my mom put down some of the same things I did for what she thinks I want. We both had put down good looking, smart, and athletic. She missed some other ones though (a guy with muscles and is outgoing). As for what I thought she wants to see in a mate, I put down almost exactly what she did. What my mother had put down was good values, smart, respect her, and a good carrer. My guess was kind of close, because I had put for what she wants as smart, financially stable, and respectable. Overall, I was surprised that she knew anything that I wanted, and I also learned what she wants in a guy for me.
After finishing the perfect mate form with my mom, I found that while we had the same ideas, she put some answers I wasn't expecting. She said that she wants a girl who is adventurous, and loves to travel; something that I would look for in a girl that I did not even think of. She also said she would look for someone that is be smart, attractive, and have a good sense of humor; which is where we agreed. When my mom had to predict what I would put, she pretty much understood what I am looking for; outgoing, funny, a nice personality. Neither of us put many physical traits if any. Before doing this assignment, I thought my parents and I would have very different answers, but I was surprised to see that we had common ideas.
After doing the perfect mate form with my mom i noticed two things. Firstly i noticed that she wanted pretty much what i wanted in a girlfriend for me. I also noticed that what we put down is what everybody wants in thier perfect nate. These are the qualities that make up a very well rounded person.
My mom and I have basically the same ideas. She is a little more specific with looks, and added some characteristics that if i had remembered I would have added them too. Things such as gets along with my family & friends and responsible. But I was also suprised with how little she put. The traits we agreed about were tall, smart, fun to be around, and athletic. That was definately not a suprise, we talked about that ever since I started talking to her about boys.
I completed the Perfect Mate form with my parents, and discovered something quite interesting! Let me tell you about it...
I thought it was interesting how me and my mother had similar ideas, but hers were much more specific. It seemed that she had a better idea of what I wanted than I did! For example, I split my traits into physical and personality categories. Under physical i simply had "cute." When i flipped the paper to look at my moms answers, she had many more things such as attractive eyes, long hair, athletic, etc... all of which i find very attractive. In the personality section our answers matched more closely. We both said the my perfect mate would have a good sense of humor, not seek attention, be intelligent, etc... This taught me that my mom may actually have a very good idea of what i like!
After I completed this, I discovered a lot about what my mom thought I would want in a girl versus what I actually would want in a girl. She thought that my perfect mate would be witty, athletic, and computer literate. Personally, I couldn't care less about these things. On my side I wrote pretty and smart, which my mom left out. One thing that she put which I agree with was worldly tolerant. She is completely right. For what my mom wanted in a girl, we both wrote the same things. From this, I learned that my mother doesn't really care about intelligence or beauty in a girl, while I don't care about wittiness or athleticism. This is what I learned from this project.
Initially, I believed that my description of a perfect mate would be relatively similar to my mother’s description of my ideal mate. I was correct in this belief; however, some aspects of my mother’s response were surprising. My mother described my perfect mate as “someone who appreciated his gifts and respected him. Someone who is his intellectual equal and has a similar sense of honor and level of optimism”. I had expected my mother to include several other characteristics. My mother is completely intolerant of chauvinists; my mother detests unreasoning devotion to a specific group of people. I had also expected my mother to describe my perfect mate as passionate, but not zealous. I defined my perfect mate as someone who is intelligent, courteous, placid, and has a similar personality. My perfect mate would moral, relatively attractive, and tolerant of my self-deprecating statements. My mother’s description of my perfect mate was relatively similar to my definition of a perfect mate.
I was surprised when I read what my mom had to say. Her thoughts on the perfect mate were simple: smart, good morals, and (of course) tall and good looking. We both had tall, smart, and good morals. I've always figured that all our views would be different. My dad simply wanted my mate to have experienced "service before self" through the military, Peace Corps, etc.. What surprised me most was that neither of my parents put anything that had to do with love of traveling, since that's all my family has really done in at least the past 14 years, and everyone in my family has a love for going places. My opinion on the perfect mate was that you never really know what your looking for until you actually find it. I did have characteristics, like funny, open-minded,athletic, and caring, but I'll know what I'm looking for when I find it.
I don't share a lot about my love life with my family...so I thought my mother would be clueless as to what I would look for in a guy. But all her answers fit what I would look for. Although, her answers were kind of vague (apparently she did not read the instructions) so it wasn't hard to not fit those categories. And my answers matched her answers to what SHE would choose for me. But then again, most parents would want those traits in their daugher/son's boyfriend/girlfriend. The traits that my mom missed for what I want in a guy were good teeth, not boring, and nice. I have no idea why she didn't put nice...She also put down that I'd like someone athletic but that isn't necessarily true. Yes, I do not want a fat boyfriend but he doesn't have to be a complete jock. Then, for the part where she said what she would want in my boyfriend, she had healthy which I did not put in my side. I didn't really think of that but her, being a doctor did. And now that I think about it, I would prefer not having a man with lots of diseases/illnesses. Thanks Mom...
After completing the PerfectMate form, I notice that my dad's traits were pretty close to mine. I said I would want a slim girl, thats kind, treats me well, and a real sweetheart. I wouldn't' her to be too high on the popularity chain where I would have to worry about her 24/7, but I also wouldn't want her to be one of those loner girls. I would also want her to be honest with me, and to be sharing with her problems. After looking at my dad's answers and consulting them with him, I was surprised that they were very similar to mine. My dad's traits were that she would have to be honest, truthful, outgoing, friendly, physically fit. So I guess me and my dad have the same ideas and interests in girls. Now that's a little creepy. Maybe it runs in the family?
^ Haha Elise. So, anyways, after finishing my perfect mate for with my mom I found we had a few things in common with who I want in a guy. Both her and I wanted a boy who was intelligent, kind, funny, and is educated. She put down reliable and honesty, which I thought was good, and should've put. She also put, can and does take care of themselves, which I also agree with. I was surprised she didn't put polite. While I put good-looking, however, my mother put nothing about looks or attractiveness, thanks mom.
After completing the worksheet, my answers were different than my moms. My perfect mate is somebody who is funny, kind, athletic, muscular, athletic, and rich. My mom's perfect mate was somebody who is responsible, respectful, kind, smart, and attractive. My mom also wants my perfect mate to be somebody with nice eyes and a cute smile. The nice eyes and cute smile threw me off the most because she is always says that looks don’t matter.
After completing the PerfectMate sheet and forgetting about the blog, then discussing pretty much the same prompt in class, I discovered, like many others, that my preferences in what I look for in a guy are pretty close to my mom's. We've never really agreed on who I date or what I look for, but what we wrote down was actually very similar. For instance, we both wrote down athletic, outgoing, and smart. We agreed that he would also have to be nice, caring, and ambitious. At the same time, while I wrote that I like guys with muscles and who have earrings, my mom prefers loyal, thoughtful guys who are family oriented. Apparently I go for more physical traits than personality-wise, but overall I found it surprising at all of the traits we actually both would look for in a guy I would date.
After completing the Perfect Mate form, i discovered something very interesting. I learned that my mom and I have almost the same ideas of the perfect guy for me. We both said that a perfect mate should be honest and nice. A couple differences were that i said that he should be smart and attractive and she didn't have those. I was surprised that She didn't say he should be smart and have a good education becuase she cares a lot about that. She also said that a perfect mate should be considerate and respectful and i didn't have that on my list. I think she said that because she wants him to be nice and respectful to me but she also thinks it's important to have respect and consideration for the parents. Overall, I saw that there weren't many differences in our opinions about my perfect mate.
I completed the perfect mate form and i discovered that my mom and i have similar interest when it comes to who would be perfect for me. I thought before my mom filled it out, that she would write the typical things a parent would write.. someone who is respectful, and kind. But after talking with her about it she agreed with the traits i wrote down, saying that they would be what she would also recommend for me.
When my Mom (I chose my mom because you know how weird dads can be) and I filled out this form, we discovered that we both know what we want. I guessed correctly for what she wanted and she guessed correctly as to what I wanted. My mom knew that I'm interested in someone funny, and thoughtful. I knew that she looked for someone courteous that would open doors for me and walk me to the door, and who was responsible and respectful. The one characteristic she missed though was interesting. I had underlined interesting and "NOT boring", but she didn't put that down. But for the most part we knew what we wanted.
When I completed the form of my perfect mate it didn't really surprise me. I had my mo fill it out and her and Igot mostly the same answers. Responsible, fun, good-looking, nice, sweet. all the usuals. And we both said she should be shoter than me. I thinks it would be werid to have a taller girl. So, overall we both put the same things and I guess she knows me better than I thought.
Even though I never notice it, my parents and I see things the same way through. I am constantly sharing my thoughts with them; we are close. This particular assignment made our similarities even more recognizable. What we all see in a good partner is honesty and trust.
Responsible, fun, good-looking, nice, sweet. all the usuals. And we both said she should be shoter than me. I thinks it would be werid to have a taller girl. So, overall we both put the same things and I guess she knows me better than I thought.
